I was going fishing in one of the mini back bays in Newport Beach when Louie Paradise, more commonly known as Louif Paradis, called me. Louif and his girlfriend Eve had just driven from British Columbia and were driving through Newport to San Diego and then on to Quebec. So they joined me and some friends.

Eve opened it up real quick. She caught hers before Louif even had his bait in the water. We were catching sand sharks.

My friend Narissa was on a rampage. This shark I'm grappling with is the first fish she ever caught.

Louif reeling one in. He's all mellow about it.

And tossing it back.

Narissa caught this sting ray as well. I was scared of it.

This is my friend Joe and his first fish ever. The two times I've fished here, three of my friends have caught their first fish ever. Drainage water produces hungry fish.

Catching Up With Sean Tedore

Sean Tedore has been backing Ashbury since before we even came up with a name. You remember him from Neoproto and now you may be riding some new technology that he's come up with at K2 since he's the man behind their snowboards. I've been trying to interview him for about a week now, and finally nailed him down. If you like what he has to say then you should peruse his blog, we have a link to the right.

Hey Sean, where are you at right now?

Sean: I am at work in Seattle, at K2.

Alright, I had to ask. You're in China one day, Hood the next, who knows where you're gonna be. It must be nice to not have to deal with me anymore in Seattle though huh?

Sean: No way man! I miss the peaceful nature walks to the coffee stand.

Those were nice, weren't they.

Sean: The best.

Well what are you working on now? Anything you can tell me about?

Sean: Some top secret super duper 09 flying saucer type shreds. Next level. I would try to explain it, but you might get confused.

I'm not opposed to flying saucers.

Sean: Gonna be real sweet.

I know it's been a while since you were filming video parts and stuff, but how do you like being on the other side of the snowboard industry?

Sean: It's really good. I definitely miss the days of filming with my friends, but I don't miss the debt, injurys, and stressing out about my job. So I am real happy with the change. I still get to shred a ton and get to hang with a lot of the same people I did back when, so it rules!

It does rule. You had my favorite part in Neoproto.

Sean: Really? That rules!

Yeah, your backside seven and switch frontsive five melon clinched it for me. I don't know if you remember those particular tricks.

Sean: Yeah I do. That was such a fun year. It was our first year doing Neoproto, and we didn't really have any idea how it was gonna turn out. I think it kinda kicked off this whole new video style that a lot of kids are into now. Pierre and Justin killed it right out the gate and made an insane movie. I am so stoked at how far they have taken it with the People movies.

Oh it definitely got people to make videos differently. So back to your new lifestyle, how is China?

Sean: China is crazy! So much action, poverty, smog, super rich people, dogs everywhere and just chaos. It makes you realize how good it is here. We really take it for granted. The people in China are amazing though. So smart, and super willing to learn more about our culture and styles. The best part is the driving. People drive crazy and cars always have the right away.

Yeah, do you drive?

Sean: No way. It's nuts. It makes me laugh when I come back to the states, and people get all pissed for getting cut off or something. They just don't understand how organized our roads are. I never get road rage anymore after being around driving over there.

Sounds like European lift lines.

Sean: The funniest thing is when pedestrians in the US get pissed about you not stopping to let them cross the road. If you tried that in China as a pedestrian you would get squashed.

How much time do you spend there a year? Do you have some clandestine family out there?

Sean: Haha, no family yet. I am there for about a month a year, but I am talking to the kids at the factory every day.

What other cool places does work take you?

Sean: Just all over the states, Colorado, Vegas, Canada, Hood, you know the usual west coast shred zones.

How is the dog?

Sean: Oh man the dog is awesome. We just took him to Mt. Hood and he loved it! We fed him Cobra Dogs and Volcano cones! Check this...

Oh man. What flavor is he eating right there?

Sean: Only vanilla, alot of that other stuff is bad for dogs.

Your dog sticks to the classics

Sean: Yeah real classy pup. Listens to all the old jams as well. Him and Scotty hung out a lot in hood.

That's good to hear, do you two ever argue over who is better between the Beatles and the Stones?

Sean: Sometimes, but we both agree the Stones have the edge.

Any rain in Seattle these days? What's your thoughts on Seattle compared to Reno or Tahoe?

Sean: Oh man, do I really have to answer? Just kiddin. I love Seattle, the people, the city, so much fun. I have met alot of great people here. But I have a soft spot in my heart for Reno. It's got the best of everything. Sun, Tahoe, my family, great friends, casinos, centrally located. So it's a tough choice. I really miss the pow days in Tahoe where it dumps all night and is bluebird in the AM. That's the best.

I can't think of anything better than that.

Sean: But Seattle is rad this time of year, especially since we have this rad crew of dudes that golf every Friday night. It's called the Men's Group.

Who's in the Men's Group? I would have joined if I were still there.

Sean: Yeah its rad, Brad Shueffelle, George Kleckner, Blue Montgomery, Cory Little, all sorts of fools. We even golf with none other than Russell Winfield!

I'm a little jealous. My first snowboard was a Joel Mahaffey/Russel Winfield snowboard.

Sean: Yeah I was totally star struck at first, He rules. If anyone is in Seattle on a Friday night and wants to golf, feel free to hit one of us up. West Seattle Golf Course. I actually need to get going since it's Friday and the cousre it waiting.

Catching Up With Neil 'Neir' Dacosta

I first met Neil Dacosta about 6 years ago when we were both living in Salt Lake City. He was just starting to break out on the snowboard scene and I was just starting to realize that I should be concentrating more on school. One of the things I noticed about Neil though, is that he's one of those guys who shows no outward signs of his creativity. I think a lot of people these days attempt to project their creativity through their appearance. Neil projects his creativity through his work. So Neil, what are you up to right now?

Neil: Trying to relax before our show tonight, our second one so I am still pretty nervous.

Show? I didn't know you had a band?

Neil: Shelby Menzel's band "The Sentimental Gentlemen". We DON'T sound like Yanni.

That sounds like a name Shelby would come up with.

Neil: Well we are sentimental gentlemen.

Well if I get this up soon enough, where can people go see you tonight for themselves?

Neil: Wimpy's Bar, 519 NW 21st AVE. I think.

Who else is in the band and what are you playing?

Neil: Shelby Menzel on guitar, Mr. Jonathan Schier on drums, Michael Leblanc on trombone, and yours truly on bass.

Bass huh? That's pretty fitting. I always get nice photos of you catching largemouth bass. Have you been playing any of them lately?

Neil: Only one little one so far this season.

What a brave dog.

Neil: She fell in not too long after.

What's her name?

Neil: Loki.

I bet everyone likes Loki. Have you made your way up to Hood this summer?

Neil: Thats where I caught that fish, I haven't put on snowboard boots yet though. I like taking the summer off from snow.

I think fishing may be a little more summer appropriate.

Neil: Unless there is cash involved.

Yeah I hear you on that. I forgot what money looks like.

Neil: Yea, summers off build up the stoke for when the real snow comes.

When I met you, you were living in Salt Lake City. How's Portland in comparison?

Neil: Completely different world. When I am in Salt Lake, it is for the snow. Salt Lake is great for snow, Portland has beautiful summers and thats what I am here for.

Who did you shoot with this winter? Any highlights?

Neil: Mostly with women riders. The whole Roxy team and a bunch with Sara Phillips. Then a little with Team Thunder. And even less with my Scandinavian Action Horse buddies.

Action Horse, that's a good name.

Neil: Good name for good guys.

Here's one for all the photography dorks, actually I have two in a row for the photography dorks. Question One: What is your favorite thing to shoot?

Neil: Yikes. I am trying to shoot more portraits. That could be my favorite thing at the moment.

That's good, that's actually the reason I asked. I've always thought you shot really good portraits.

Neil: Does "nudes" make me sound cooler?

Nudes make you seem creepier, and everyone knows creeps are mad artsy! Are you ready for photo dork question two?

Neil: Yea.

Ok. What is your favorite camera set up to shoot with at the moment?

Neil: My T3 point and shoot 35mm camera, it makes me take "snapshots" which I never used to really do. I always had to plan shoots, but not with the T3. Completely different realm of photography for me.

Yeah, I love my Elph. I don't know how it stands up to the T3. But it's good to always be ready to make or ruin someone's day with a nice photograph.

Neil: Hopefully I haven't ruined anyone's day yet. This interview might do that though. Remember when I used to shoot photos of you?

Yeah, those days were the best. My parents framed one of them. I should go shoot some Elph photos of you this winter.

Neil: That would definitely ruin someone's day.

Joe Carlino on Today's Earthquake

As you may have heard already, there was an earthquake in Southern California today. I always like earthquakes, as long as no one gets hurt. You know, the day is considerably more interesting when an earthquake drops in. So I decided to see what Joe Carlino thought about it all.

Joe, did you feel that earthquake today?

Joe: Yea, it felt cute.

Were you editing? Did it ruin everything?

Joe: No, Corey and I were talking about the avalanche he was in, then the room started to shake. It was wild.

It felt really strong up here, how was it down there? Are you used to earthquakes yet?

Joe: Not that bad, nothing fell over. That was the biggest I have felt since I moved to California.

It would be. It opened my filing cabinets and knocked over some pictures and dvds. Did you hide in a doorway?

Joe: Nah, we just all looked at each other. I thought about. I was more worried about protecting the hard drives. Like in case the wall fell down.

I thought about it too, but instead I looked out my window. Do you think that These Days will be influenced by the quake, like maybe it will be more edgy now?

Joe: I hope, I think thats what snowboarding needs right now.

Yeah, maybe the earthquake will be foreshadowing of the new trends for next season.

Joe: Whats that? Construction helmets?

Maybe, or maybe people will start riding their fixed gears to the top of the slope instead of using the chairlift.

Joe: I heard the new Autumn Line movie is edgy, I want to see it.

Yeah it's out there. I heard that the Newsroom movie is done too. It's getting around that time. When is your movie done?

Joe: Probably never at this point.

Peter Benchetler just got back from Belize with his family. He sent me some photos, without much explanation other than titling the photos. Which is fine. I think the photos speak for themselves. Don't expect these photos to be in any sort of chronological order either, they're just laid out alphabetically.

Super Girl in Huntington Beach, CA

The US Open of Surfing is going on at Huntington Beach right now and alongside the US Open there is an all female snowboard contest, skate contest, and all kinds of other things. Huntington is kind of a weird place as it is, but you bring all this with it and it's super awkward and crowded.

Well Desiree did the snowboard contest today. Big Mountain Mike, Harrison, and I came along as well to intimidate the judges or back her up in a fight or whatever.

Here's one of the cool tricks though. Hardway 180 fakie 5050. I took it a little early, but it was FT. And in case you care to know who won, it was Laurie Currier from Wrightwood. She landed a lot of tricks. And an honorable mention is Raewyn Reid, who I believe got second, but she nearly made a hardway backside 180 fakie 5-0. Yeah crazy. She locked into it, but just didn't ride out. Almost though.

I think she is trying to look like a Super Sayan again.

Some old lady ran a stop sign and ruined my day, actually ruined a month of my life...

I took the initial impact with my left which fractured my scapula and cracked my collar bone, I also partially collapsed my left lung.

Then when I hit the ground on my right side it separated my ac joint a little, and smashed my face and got some stitches by my eyebrow.
Luckily I saved my bike with my body, it's totally fine.

FUCK, THAT SOUNDS ROUGH, AND YOU PAID 28G'S OUT OF YOUR OWN POCKET? NO INSURANCE?

nah, I have health insurance, but that's how much all my bills were.

The lady was way under insured too, just had the state minimum. So no big settlements or anything... next time I'll aim for a Range Rover!

I hope to be a full time photographer, working with the snowboard film crews again... I did all last winter and got a ton of great photos.
The mags are all hyped, and so are the brands who sponsor the riders I shot.

Sean: Oh hi Lance.

HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING AWAY IN YOUR EDITING LAIR FOR A WHILE NOW?

Sean: Shit, I have only left my basement in the past week for a Taco break. A man has got to eat. But seriously, I've been here stressing out for quite some time now.

STRESSING, SOUNDS LIKE EVERY EDITOR ABOUT NOW. HOW IS THIS YEAR'S TEAM THUNDER SHAPING UP?

Sean: Well to tell you the truth, way better than I thought it was going to be. It is crazy going through and editing everybody's part, at first you don't know what to think, but i am loving watching it come together, other than the fact that my back hurts from sitting down.

Sean: Ya that's why MDP's stuff is such high quality, Dawger is standing up all day editing, while I'm here just hangin in my lounge chair.

Sean: Well.... yes and no. The two main filmers Adam Morales and myself do share a camera. I CAN'T IMAGINE THAT

Corey: Joe Carlino has been coming up with some great stuff and Transworld is giving us a pretty layed back timeline, But I am going crazy too cause i want kids to be stoked... thats what we are doing it for man.

HOW IS WORKING ON THIS MOVIE COMPARED TO NEOPROTO/PEOPLE? YOU WERE WITH THEM FOREVER, THIS MUST BE DIFFERENT

Corey: yeah things are way different man for sure. I spent a long time with Pierre, Justin and Gabe and it was like a family. We definately made some good movies and we had a tight crew. But this year was way different. All new filmer and riders so it made things interesting... Everyone on our crew rider wise was fairly new to filming a video part and it took a little time for them to get in a rythm, But as the year progressed the guys got into a good groove and everyone who rode in the movie surpased my expectations. They took in every bit of advice and got some great stuff on film.
Working with unknown kids has been so rewarding. We worked twice as hard as normal but looking back on it I personally feel so fulfilled from the experiences we had on the road. Everyone put they're whole heart into this, which meant the world to the filmers... and Look out for some serious surprises this year.

I just wish i could work with everyone again.

YEAH ONE OF ASHBURY'S PRO'S NICK DIRKS IS INTHE FILM, HOW'D HE DO?

Corey: Ok so when Joe Carlino asked me if I thought we should have Nick Dirks in the movie I was like Nick who? Then I was like sure if you think he can do it than ok. To me he was a wild card cause I had never seen him snowboard before, to to say the least i was super skeptical. Well a year later its not Nick who? but Damn this kid can snowboard. He seriously blew my mind everytime I snowboarded and filmed with him. He is not a video part snowboarder, he snowboards for the love of it. If we weren't filming he would still go snowboarding all day long and would always come back with a smile. Oh yeah he's from the Northwest too so he has some pretty sweet style. That was one of the biggest things about Nick to me, his style and his attitude for snowboarding. Its not the money that makes him want to push himself he just loves it. So i guess to sum things up he destroyed it, he can ride rails really good and he can jump really good and oh yeah he can actually do a method! Watch out for Nick Jerks he's coming for your paychecks people.

YEAH I THINK PEOPLE ARE GONNA BE HYPED WHEN THEY SEE WHAT HE'S BEEN UP TO... SO IS THE MOVIE ALMOST DONE?

Corey: uh yeah its gettin there, everyone's parts are layed out just need to tighten it up a bit.

So i did a quick mini interview with Pierre Minhondo, him and Justin Eeles are who's behind the mdp-people videos, and the o.g. neoproto movies. Everyone who is making a movie is crazy stressed right now cause the deadlines are coming up, and they've seen all the footage a million times so now it looks weak to them. They've also been trapped in an office and sitting in front of a computer for the last few months.

here's what Pierre had to say:

that takes all the excitement out of it
that's half the fun. You take the DVD or your at the premier and the intro finishes and then bam. you find out first part
and then your anxious the rest of the movie and parts pass and pass and you start figuring it out in your head who you think has last part and then it comes and it's a good suprise

Saw the Zombies the other night at the fillmore in NYC, if you don't know, they were a good rock n roll band from the mid sixties (white boy blues), the blues magoo's opened up for them... 60's garage group as well. they got famous from their hit "we aint got nothin yet"

Devendra Banhart and Gilberto Gil and the Hollywood Bowl

I went to see Devendra Banhart with Nima and his girlfriend Annette last night. He played with Gilberto Gil and The Album Leaf. We didn't even know the Album Leaf was opening until we got there. And we were pretty much ignorant to the headlining Gilberto's music.

I took this photo the night before in LA at a taco stand. I could be dying and I wouldn't use that thing.

Devendra only played 8 or so songs. It was a bit of a let down, but he was good while he lasted.

Gilberto's charisma made me forget that Devendra had such a short set. He really got things going.

For Gilberto's last song he invited Devendra back on stage.

We walked by this combo earning some bucks on our way to the car. A lady tried to harass them for playing too loud (which they honestly weren't), but Nima set things straight.

Emerica Wins the Anticipation Poll

I have an old spot book that I was making for a little while back when I shot skateboarding a bunch. I was with Leo Romero a lot back then and since Emerica won and he's one of Emerica's stars, I figured I'd throw a couple of these Polaroids up.

I wasn't carrying my Polaroid camera around to take artsy photos, it was a cheap camera that I used solely to log spots and write the address on the bottom, which I photoshopped out of a couple of these.

The school Bill and Ted made famous also has this triple set. That's Gareth Stehr mid ollie. This day was actually a pretty heavy day. Between the three dudes I was with, the triple set saw a switch ollie, backside 180, pop shuv-it, kickflip, and heelflip.

This hubba was hot back then.

Most people when they have a trick they want on a rail this big will try to just bang it out and jet. Leo just skated it like it was a flat bar. 5050, boardslide, smith, feeble, 5050 nollie out, and backlip.

He did however end up a little cut up after the above rail. Backlip in 4 tries. And yes he liked that red hat.

The World is Ours, Corey Smith's Art Exhibit

Big Mountain Mike, Desiree, and I decided to check out Corey Smith's exhibit at Nine Star last night and meet up with Harrison and friends. A lot of people showed up, Luke McMasters was even there. It was good seeing that guy, it had been a while.

Mary-Kate and Ashley have a lot in common with Big Mountain Mike and myself, you know, like we're twins and stuff. Although we can't roll our eyes back like them.

Apparently if you have an iphone you can prank call people from other people's numbers. I found out about this when my friends' Chicken and Brandon Phillips called me from Nima's number. Below is the recording. Now I talk to Nima multiple times a day, so I was completely off guard. And the caller ID said Nima Jalali, so you can imagine what I was thinking when I got the call. Listen. I just came across one of the most amusing articles I've read in a long time. Don't ask me how, but while surfing the net I happened to land on an independent college newspaper known as The Peak. The article is titled Everyone Wants to be a Snowboarder and this college student begins to let the reader know how undeniably cool we (snowboarders) are. Instead of bringing her point home, she unknowingly proved to me something I've known all along. Snowboarding has just as many clueless enthusiasts as the next hobby, sport, counter-culture, or whatever you want to classify us as.

NBA Finals Poll

The Boston Celtics won the poll. Big deal. I think we have to spread this out into 4 categories:

1. Celtics fans
2. Laker fans
3. Celtics haters
4. Laker haters

And it's safe to say that most people who voted for Boston are in category 4 as opposed to category 1. And it's also safe to say that most people who voted for LA are part of category 2 as opposed to category 3. So what I'm trying to say is, the Lakers still come out on top.

And despite what seems like inevitability, it's not over yet. The Lakers will win tonight, and that leaves them just one game behind.

Last night was the 10th annual Transworld Skateboarding awards along with the premiere for the new Transworld video And Now. My elph is still being fixed so I was going to borrow Big Mountain Mike's camera, but of course he forgot to charge his. So unfortunately I have no photographs!

I pretty much went only for the video. Everything else was a bit of a junk show. Both the awards ceremony and after party. Not to say it wasn't entertaining, just a junk show. Guy Mariano made a sweep and Habitat didn't do so bad either. Here's who won:

And now for And Now. I'm not going to say too much, because you just have to wait to see it. But this definitely lived up to the hype. The three standout parts for me were Richie Jackson, David Gravette, and Nick Trapasso. The whole movie had good music, especially Nick. Although I need to see it again, premieres are fun, but I always have to watch it in a home-like environment to get a real feel for the movie.

Jordan Mendenhall Mini Ramp Clip

Here is a little clip of Jordan Mendenhall skating a mini ramp that Will Tuddenham of Team Thunder shot. Although I've never actually met Will, I owe him a dollar. I bet him the Lakers would sweep the Jazz in the playoffs. I knew they wouldn't but I just wanted to get under his skin. Well the Lakers are in the Finals and the Jazz are on vacation, and maybe I just won't pay Will that dollar ever. Joe Sexton's backside 360 5050 wins in a landslide! With Scotty Wittlake, Justin Hebbel, LNP, and Nima Jalali coming in the top five as well. This video below was supposed to have all five tricks, but I didn't have Scotty or Justin's tricks on DVD. So it's the best I could do. (Ok, my video failed uploading on Youtube. I'll try to get it to work, hopefully with the Justin and Scotty's tricks soon)

Although all the tricks listed deserve to be honorable mentions, I'm going to mention just two. JP Walker's frontside boardslide on the kink was unbelievable at the time. A lot of pros were still learning frontside boardslides properly and not many people were doing kink rails. But then again, JP has been changing how we snowboard, what we do on snowboards, and where we snowboard pretty much since he went pro.

The other honorable mention got one vote, mine. This trick went virtually unrecognized, in fact I'm probably the only person who cared. In the Revival Ali Goulet did a fakie front lip (think nollie boardslide, but fakie). I think the reason this trick went under the radar was because he did it at a time when you had to do one of three things to make a banger: 1) slide the rail with your butt facing down hill, 2) spin on, or 3) jump on something scary. In fact, the only person besides Ali who I've seen do this trick is Matty Ryan.
