Session 4 High Cascade

This summer has been nothing but goodtimes, 4 sessions down and 2 to go.... got a quick E.F. shot in this one. Eric was up here riding High Cascade for a hot second. Also don't blink on our boi Micah Hollinger holding down the curtains in a Bob shirt.

Catching Up With Neil 'Neir' Dacosta

I first met Neil Dacosta about 6 years ago when we were both living in Salt Lake City. He was just starting to break out on the snowboard scene and I was just starting to realize that I should be concentrating more on school. One of the things I noticed about Neil though, is that he's one of those guys who shows no outward signs of his creativity. I think a lot of people these days attempt to project their creativity through their appearance. Neil projects his creativity through his work. After you've finished reading this interview, go check out his website.

So Neil, what are you up to right now?

Neil: Trying to relax before our show tonight, our second one so I am still pretty nervous.

Show? I didn't know you had a band?

Neil: Shelby Menzel's band "The Sentimental Gentlemen". We DON'T sound like Yanni.

That sounds like a name Shelby would come up with.

Neil: Well we are sentimental gentlemen.

Well if I get this up soon enough, where can people go see you tonight for themselves?

Neil: Wimpy's Bar, 519 NW 21st AVE. I think.

Who else is in the band and what are you playing?

Neil: Shelby Menzel on guitar, Mr. Jonathan Schier on drums, Michael Leblanc on trombone, and yours truly on bass.

Bass huh? That's pretty fitting. I always get nice photos of you catching largemouth bass. Have you been playing any of them lately?

Neil: Only one little one so far this season.

What a brave dog.

Neil: She fell in not too long after.

What's her name?

Neil: Loki.

I bet everyone likes Loki. Have you made your way up to Hood this summer?

Neil: Thats where I caught that fish, I haven't put on snowboard boots yet though. I like taking the summer off from snow.

I think fishing may be a little more summer appropriate.

Neil: Unless there is cash involved.

Yeah I hear you on that. I forgot what money looks like.

Neil: Yea, summers off build up the stoke for when the real snow comes.

When I met you, you were living in Salt Lake City. How's Portland in comparison?

Neil: Completely different world. When I am in Salt Lake, it is for the snow. Salt Lake is great for snow, Portland has beautiful summers and thats what I am here for.

Who did you shoot with this winter? Any highlights?

Neil: Mostly with women riders. The whole Roxy team and a bunch with Sara Phillips. Then a little with Team Thunder. And even less with my Scandinavian Action Horse buddies.

Action Horse, that's a good name.

Neil: Good name for good guys.

Here's one for all the photography dorks, actually I have two in a row for the photography dorks. Question One: What is your favorite thing to shoot?

Neil: Yikes. I am trying to shoot more portraits. That could be my favorite thing at the moment.

That's good, that's actually the reason I asked. I've always thought you shot really good portraits.

Neil: Does "nudes" make me sound cooler?

Nudes make you seem creepier, and everyone knows creeps are mad artsy! Are you ready for photo dork question two?

Neil: Yea.

Ok. What is your favorite camera set up to shoot with at the moment?

Neil: My T3 point and shoot 35mm camera, it makes me take "snapshots" which I never used to really do. I always had to plan shoots, but not with the T3. Completely different realm of photography for me.

Yeah, I love my Elph. I don't know how it stands up to the T3. But it's good to always be ready to make or ruin someone's day with a nice photograph.

Neil: Hopefully I haven't ruined anyone's day yet. This interview might do that though. Remember when I used to shoot photos of you?

Yeah, those days were the best. My parents framed one of them. I should go shoot some Elph photos of you this winter.

Neil: That would definitely ruin someone's day.

Ichat Image Interview with Sexton

I got down to some serious business with Joe Sexton today. Serious business. Joe and I are no fun together, just straight faces. Straight faces and tucked in shirts. We get along alright enough, we just tuck in our shirts and get to it. Here is a little ichat we had.

It's a little hard to read, I can't make them any bigger. You might have to click on the images to make them bigger.

Joe Carlino on Today's Earthquake

As you may have heard already, there was an earthquake in Southern California today. I always like earthquakes, as long as no one gets hurt. You know, the day is considerably more interesting when an earthquake drops in. So I decided to see what Joe Carlino thought about it all.

Joe, did you feel that earthquake today?

Joe: Yea, it felt cute.

Were you editing? Did it ruin everything?

Joe: No, Corey and I were talking about the avalanche he was in, then the room started to shake. It was wild.

It felt really strong up here, how was it down there? Are you used to earthquakes yet?

Joe: Not that bad, nothing fell over. That was the biggest I have felt since I moved to California.

It would be. It opened my filing cabinets and knocked over some pictures and dvds. Did you hide in a doorway?

Joe: Nah, we just all looked at each other. I thought about. I was more worried about protecting the hard drives. Like in case the wall fell down.

I thought about it too, but instead I looked out my window. Do you think that These Days will be influenced by the quake, like maybe it will be more edgy now?

Joe: I hope, I think thats what snowboarding needs right now.

Yeah, maybe the earthquake will be foreshadowing of the new trends for next season.

Joe: Whats that? Construction helmets?

Maybe, or maybe people will start riding their fixed gears to the top of the slope instead of using the chairlift.

Joe: I heard the new Autumn Line movie is edgy, I want to see it.

Yeah it's out there. I heard that the Newsroom movie is done too. It's getting around that time. When is your movie done?

Joe: Probably never at this point.

Peter in Belize

Peter Benchetler just got back from Belize with his family. He sent me some photos, without much explanation other than titling the photos. Which is fine. I think the photos speak for themselves. Don't expect these photos to be in any sort of chronological order either, they're just laid out alphabetically.

Barracuda are fast. Peter must be an unbelievable swimmer to catch this guy.

The Belize River, from Peter's vantage point. He's very tall.

Bonefish.

Peter's the copilot.

Crocodile territory.

Peter's haggard grill.

Dinner.

Dolphins are very intelligent, and everyone knows it takes intelligence to be capable of evil. Everyone knows that. Well, dolphins are sometimes guilty of gang rapes.

Peter's Belizean front yard.

His goodbye photo.

I'm not the guy who goes in the water when there are jellyfish around. Peter however isn't afraid to stare danger in the face.

Peter tanning.

Peter labeled this one, Lancestore. I believe I'm a little more prudent than that.

Copilot Peter's seat.

You can see Peter fishing in the distance.

Protective measures.

Awwww.

Doesn't this look nice.

This reminds me of the bass fishing games I'd play as a child.

Super Girl in Huntington Beach, CA

The US Open of Surfing is going on at Huntington Beach right now and alongside the US Open there is an all female snowboard contest, skate contest, and all kinds of other things. Huntington is kind of a weird place as it is, but you bring all this with it and it's super awkward and crowded.

Well Desiree did the snowboard contest today. Big Mountain Mike, Harrison, and I came along as well to intimidate the judges or back her up in a fight or whatever.

Desiree and Harrison, happy in hats.

Palm trees.

Creepy microphone.

Don't worry, she's ok.

This girl backside smithed that rail FT.

Harrison and Big Mountain.

Under all those tents are pretty much every stupid idea you've ever had.

Desiree 5-0. This was Desiree's first time snowboarding since breaking her collarbone in April. She did all your favorite tricks. I'd tell you what they were, but then I'd sound like a douche bag. And I want you to like me.

Here's one of the cool tricks though. Hardway 180 fakie 5050. I took it a little early, but it was FT. And in case you care to know who won, it was Laurie Currier from Wrightwood. She landed a lot of tricks. And an honorable mention is Raewyn Reid, who I believe got second, but she nearly made a hardway backside 180 fakie 5-0. Yeah crazy. She locked into it, but just didn't ride out. Almost though.

I think she is trying to look like a Super Sayan again.

Catching up with Robbie sell

Robbie doesn't ride for Ashbury, but why not catch up with him?

Robbie owns this Ak47, he also just bought a Glock 17 too... No joke

ROBBIE WHERE YOU AT?

Robbie: at a coffee shop in Portland

WHY ARE YOU IN PORTLAND?

I came up to hang out at Mt Hood for a session at HCSC to get some photos, and now I'm just visiting friends in the city, and to chase after some hipster girls.

NICE, THEN BACK TO RENO?

Yeah, back home to take advantage of the rent I pay.  Then off to southern california to stop by the snowboard magazines and to see other friends and to chase after some beach babes.

YOU GONNA COME VISIT ME IN LA BEFORE THAT?

yeah for sure. Pierre and I actually might be bicycling from SF to SD.

OH SHIT, THAT'D BE CRAZY

it's going to be sweet... I'm down for pedaling.

LANCE JUST TRIED TO GO FROM SF TO LA, BUT HE COULDN'T HANG AND TOOK THE TRAIN BACK.

He told me about the itinerary and it was way too much, even for a trained rider.

WHAT'S THIS SHIT I HEARD ABOUT YOU GETTING IN SOME BIKE ACCIDENT?

Some old lady ran a stop sign and ruined my day, actually ruined a month of my life...
$28,000.00 later and my shoulders still hurt.

WHAT KINDA DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE SHOULDERS?

I took the initial impact with my left which fractured my scapula and cracked my collar bone, I also partially collapsed my left lung.
Then when I hit the ground on my right side it separated my ac joint a little, and smashed my face and got some stitches by my eyebrow.
Luckily I saved my bike with my body, it's totally fine.

FUCK, THAT SOUNDS ROUGH, AND YOU PAID 28G'S OUT OF YOUR OWN POCKET? NO INSURANCE?

nah, I have health insurance, but that's how much all my bills were.
The lady was way under insured too, just had the state minimum.  So no big settlements or anything... next time I'll aim for a Range Rover!

OR JUST RIDE THE BIKE PATH... AT THE BEACH

True.

WHAT'S YOUR PLANS FOR THE WINTER?

I hope to be a full time photographer, working with the snowboard film crews again... I did all last winter and got a ton of great photos.
The mags are all hyped, and so are the brands who sponsor the riders I shot.

YEAH MAN, WE GOTTA HOOK UP AND TAKE A RAIL TRIP

trips...

TRUE

It was great to work with the People crew again... missed my buddies.

WHICH FILM SHOULD WE ALL BE LOOKIN' FORWARD TO?  SINCE YOU WERE OUT THERE IN THE MIX WITH A FEW DIFFERENT CREWS.

Oh man, since we didn't get skunked on any of our trips, I say the best films are going to be: Finger On da Trigger, MDP, Autumn Line, Standard, MDP-People, and TWS... every one of those film crews I shot with and came away with "A" grade stuff.

THAT'S LIKE ALL THE MOVIES

I heard Grenade is going to be sweet, same with Absinthe too,
but they had legit photographers with them all the time, so I didn't get the call... next winter I hope!

AND YOUR WEBSITE, WHAT'S THE URL?

just my name, robbiesell.com

I DON'T THINK I'M GONNA REMEMBER THAT

I can't update it until the mags publish my new photos though. So look out for my name credits in print.

YEAH, I HEARD YOU GOT SOME LEGIT PICS COMING OUT, THANKS FOR THE INTERVIEW ROBBIE

Oh you know this!

PEACE FOOL

yeah, till we meet again!

Catching Up with Sean McCormick

Nima's been stealing my thunder on this blog lately, doing interviews with Corey and Pierre. I'm a very jealous blogger. So I figured what better way to regain my thunder than through Team Thunder's front man Sean McCormick. Above is his image and below is his interview.

HEY SEAN.

Sean: Oh hi Lance.

HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING AWAY IN YOUR EDITING LAIR FOR A WHILE NOW?

Sean: Shit, I have only left my basement in the past week for a Taco break. A man has got to eat. But seriously, I've been here stressing out for quite some time now.

STRESSING, SOUNDS LIKE EVERY EDITOR ABOUT NOW. HOW IS THIS YEAR'S TEAM THUNDER SHAPING UP?

Sean: Well to tell you the truth, way better than I thought it was going to be. It is crazy going through and editing everybody's part, at first you don't know what to think, but i am loving watching it come together, other than the fact that my back hurts from sitting down.

I HEARD ALL THE REALLY GOOD EDITORS EDIT STANDING UP.

Sean: Ya that's why MDP's stuff is such high quality, Dawger is standing up all day editing, while I'm here just hangin in my lounge chair.

I HEARD THAT YOU GUYS ONLY HAVE ONE CAMERA? THAT'S GOTTA BE ROUGH.

Sean: Well.... yes and no. The two main filmers Adam Morales and myself do share a camera. But we got a lot of help from other filmers, such as Will King, and Joe Carlino got some good stuff of Harrison (Gordon) and Jarad (Hadi) so that helped a ton and than some others but ya. 2filmers1camera.com, that is just part of Team Thunder.

HARRISON? YOU MEAN BOARDIN' GORDON? WHAT OTHER ASHBURY PEOPLE CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE?

Sean: Boardin' Goardin is correct. You can expect to see Jordan Mendenhall, Eric Fernandez, Desiree Melancon, and I'm not sure if he is on Ashbury but I know he was sportin them all winter Cody Comrie aka Crappy.

CODY? I DON'T KNOW. IS HE EVEN ANY GOOD? NO, HE'S DEFINITELY ON.

Sean: Hmm... He tends to steal clothes and goggles a lot so you can never tell with him.

WHAT ABOUT THAT HAY BAILS VIDEO, THAT WAS SORT OF A HIT. DID YOU GUYS EXPECT IT TO GET THAT KIND OF RESPONSE?

Sean: Not at all, it was the shittiest day of the year, so we decided to go to the park and goof around, it ended up being so awesome though, I loved making that montage. I remember when I got done editing it and thinking about how much fun making movies is. By far the best way to start a good video.

OK, I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU A PHOTO AND I WANT YOU TO REACT TO IT.

Sean: Oh my dear god. Thats the most fucked up thing I've seen.......... ever.

YEAH IT MAKES ME SICK. THAT IS A PITBULL WHO ATTACKED A PORCUPINE.

Sean: I can see that. That's not helping my editing concentration

WHO'S PART ARE YOU EDITING?

Sean: Well I jump around a lot. Right now I just finished Will's (Tuddenham) part, Blue World and Desiree's part. In the past hour that's what I've done.

BLUE WORLD?

Sean: Don't worry about it. Could be another hit.

PEOPLE LIKE HITS.

Sean: Who doesn't like a hit? Nobody.

WELL KIDS WHO ARE SUPER EDGY AND MISUNDERSTOOD TEND TO LIKE TO DISREGARD THE HITS.

Sean: Ya kinda like Harrison and Jarad, they are way edgy.

OK, ONE LAST QUESTION.
FAVORITE SNOWBOARD VIDEO OF ALL TIME?

Sean: Ohhhh man, this is a tough question. Burning Bridges. Ya. Burning Bridges for sure. I don't want that to boost Shelby's ego if he reads this though.

Sean and Neil 'Nier' Dacosta

COOL, THANKS SEAN. I'M DEFINITELY SOLD ON GOLD COUNTRY. ANY LAST WORDS?

Sean: Thanks to you Lance, thanks to Ashbury for being so good to the Thunders and wish me luck on the video, she should be done tomorrow.

TOMORROW? BE SURE TO PUT ON SUN BLOCK BEFORE LEAVING THE HOUSE.

Sean: Thanks for caring.

Catching up with Corey Konineic

I caught up with Corey Konineic (formerly of Neoproto/People) to see what he's been up to.
I can't wait to see the Transworld Movie "These Days"...  Corey is at Transworld helping edit the movie.

This is where Corey sleeps while editing the movie.

Corey hangin' out in his bedroom.

COREY, WHERE YOU AT?

Corey: right now I am in a dark room and my eyes are bleeding
haha just kidding hanging in Oceanside, CA at Transworld HQ editing the new movie "These Days"

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE MOVIE TO COME OUT... ARE YOU GOING CRAZY?

Corey: nah not too bad. I am actually way less stressed then normal

I CAN'T IMAGINE THAT

Corey: Joe Carlino has been coming up with some great stuff and Transworld is giving us a pretty layed back timeline, But I am going crazy too cause i want kids to be stoked... thats what we are doing it for man.

HOW IS WORKING ON THIS MOVIE COMPARED TO NEOPROTO/PEOPLE? YOU WERE WITH THEM FOREVER, THIS MUST BE DIFFERENT

Corey: yeah things are way different man for sure. I spent a long time with Pierre, Justin and Gabe and it was like a family. We definately made some good movies and we had a tight crew. But this year was way different.  All new filmer and riders so it made things interesting... Everyone on our crew rider wise was fairly new to filming a video part and it took a little time for them to get in a rythm, But as the year progressed the guys got into a good groove and everyone who rode in the movie surpased my expectations. They took in every bit of advice and got some great stuff on film.
Working with unknown kids has been so rewarding. We worked twice as hard as normal but looking back on it I personally feel so fulfilled from the experiences we had on the road. Everyone put they're whole heart into this, which meant the world to the filmers... and  Look out for some serious surprises this year.
I just wish i could work with everyone again.

YEAH ONE OF ASHBURY'S PRO'S NICK DIRKS IS INTHE FILM, HOW'D HE DO?

Corey: Ok so when Joe Carlino asked me if I thought we should have Nick Dirks in the movie I was like Nick who? Then I was like sure if you think he can do it than ok.  To me he was a wild card cause I had never seen him snowboard before, to to say the least i was super skeptical. Well a year later its not Nick who? but Damn this kid can snowboard.  He seriously blew my mind everytime I snowboarded and filmed with him. He is not a video part snowboarder, he snowboards for the love of it. If we weren't filming he would still go snowboarding all day long and would always come back with a smile.  Oh yeah he's from the Northwest too so he has some pretty sweet style.  That was one of the biggest things about Nick to me, his style and his attitude for snowboarding.  Its not the money that makes him want to push himself he just loves it.  So i guess to sum things up he destroyed it, he can ride rails really good and he can jump really good and oh yeah he can actually do a method!  Watch out for Nick Jerks he's coming for your paychecks people.

YEAH I THINK PEOPLE ARE GONNA BE HYPED WHEN THEY SEE WHAT HE'S BEEN UP TO...  SO IS THE MOVIE ALMOST DONE?

Corey: uh yeah its gettin there, everyone's parts are layed out just need to tighten it up a bit.

WHEN'S THE DEADLINE?

Corey: Well Joe is leaving to Argentina on the 5th of August, so i guess two weeks.

THANKS COREY, AND WHEN AND WHERE IS THE PREMIER?

Corey: yeah thank you Ashbury, the premier is on September 4th at the Wave House in San Diego...
its gonna be huge.

Catching up with Pierre Minhondo

MDP-People editing office

So i did a quick mini interview with Pierre Minhondo, him and Justin Eeles are who's behind the mdp-people videos, and the o.g. neoproto movies.   Everyone who is making a movie is crazy stressed right now cause the deadlines are coming up, and they've seen all the footage a million times so now it looks weak to them.  They've also been trapped in an office and sitting in front of a computer for the last few months.

here's what Pierre had to say:

ARE YOU SICK OF THE COMPUTER?

Pierre: yes, very over the computer...
very very very very very very over the computer

DO YOU FEEL LIKE THROWING IT?

PIerre: yes, out the window... i hate the computer

WHAT TIME DO YOU SLEEP?

Pierre: I don't sleep...
well, that's not true, I sleep four hours a day,
it's not really sleep though. it's more like four hours of 50 percent less stress

NICE, CAN YOU TELL ME WHO'S GOT FIRST PART?

Pierre: no. I can't, I can show you without printing it in your blog

CAN YOU TELL ME WHO'S GOT CURTAINS?

Pierre: I could. but i won't

NICE, NOW ALL THE KIDS ARE GONNA SAY "PIERRE IS A DICKHEAD"

Pierre: no there not, First part goes too a really amazing snowboarder who wouldn't want me to tell you he has first part.

HAVING FIRST PART IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF

Pierre:  The ender would just not be kosher for me to tell you because then it wouldn't be a suprise
and who wants to see a movie when you know the opener and ender
that takes all the excitement out of it
that's half the fun. You take the DVD or your at the premier and the intro finishes and then bam. you find out first part
and then your anxious the rest of the movie and parts pass and pass and you start figuring it out in your head who you think has last part and then it comes and it's a good suprise

WHERE DO YOU GUYS EDIT?

Pierre: we edit in Southern California...
Oceanside, CA

WHEN DOES THE MOVIE HAVE TO BE FINISHED?

Pierre: It is currently the 11th hour of edit. The movie will be finished next week.
It's not enough time. I still have to edit the intro, Simon Chamberlain's part and Jon Kooley's part...
I am half finished with Simon's part though,
I might switch seats in a few for a seat at the local theatre so i can watch Dark Knight

DID YOU GET ALL THE SONGS THAT YOU WERE TRYING TO GET?

Pierre: I am still waiting on the Intro song and Jon Kooley's song

GIVE THE KIDS A HINT OF WHO'S GOT FIRST PART

Pierre: Hint: Hey Man

OK, THANKS, IM GONNA GO WATCH SOMETHING REALLY SECRET AND THEN DELETE IT OFF MY COMPUTER

Nick Dirks and Eric Fernandez at COC by Chris Moser

Chris Moser made this video of Nick Dirks and Eric Fernandez up at Camp of Champions. His editing system went bonkers and wouldn't let him add a song. I tried to add the song for him, but the file wasn't compatible. But I actually like it as is.

Camp of Champs session 2 Video

Check Nick and Eric in this new web video Camp of champions posted.  There's some SERIOUS hammers in it.

Bassin Assassin Sexton

Joe and I talked about doing a bass counter and updating the blog once a week with how many Joe has caught for the summer. We've failed, but Joe did catch 5 while talking to Evan LeFebvre not too long ago including this 5 pounder. I need to make a trip out to Minnesota.

Session 2 High Cascade

Session 2, not sure why these end up so long. I think its because these fools are mad stacky. Speaking of stacking, Session 3 Stack Footy premiere......

Team Thunder and Snowboard Revolution come together for a Double Take with Andrew Miller featuring Harrison Gordon, Ben Gustafson, and Cody Comrie. Click the image above, you have to click right on Harrison's grabbing hand. It's a really small spot, so make sure you get your pointer right on the spot.

Devendra on Skateboarding

Having just saw Devendra Banhart a few days ago, I think this is relevant. In the April, 2006 issue of Thrasher they interviewed Devendra while he was promoting Cripple Crow. Devendra talks about skateboarding and skating the Santa Monica Court House as a kid, etc.

Click Here to read the interview. Not all famous skateboarders are embarrassing.
